This project is based on a special composition assignment by November Music to Emine Bostanci and will be produced in collaboration with the organization. For this unique project, Emine Bostanci will create an ensemble of 8 musicians, incorporating a diverse array of traditional string instruments from various geographic regions.
The Kemenche (Turkish: kemençe, Persian: kamancheh) and Lyra are traditional bowed string instruments originating from the Eastern Mediterranean region, including Greece, Armenia, Iran, Turkey, and Azerbaijan. The Kemenche is typically played upright with its tail resting on the musician’s knee, while the Lyra is held to the chest or shoulder. Although structurally similar, the Kemenche and Kamancheh differ in playing techniques and regional variations. In addition, the ensemble will feature the Erhu, a two-stringed bowed instrument from China, renowned for its expressive, melodic sound. While sharing the bowing technique with the Kemenche and Lyra, the Erhu’s distinct construction adds a unique texture to the ensemble. The program will also include the Kozby, a bowed string instrument from Kazakhstan, whose larger size and resonant sound introduce a Central Asian influence, bridging the soundscape between Central Asia and the Eastern Mediterranean.
To complement these traditional string instruments, Emine Bostanci will incorporate a string trio consisting of viola, cello, and double bass, adding depth and harmonic richness. For the rhythmic section, Emine Bostanci will collaborate with a percussionist who will use a distinctive arrangement of instruments drawn from both Western and Middle Eastern traditions. This combination of rhythmic elements will enhance the ensemble’s sound, blending the intricate patterns of Middle Eastern percussion with the textures of Western percussion to create a rich and dynamic rhythmic foundation.
The composition, Parallel Reality: Rite for Strings, will draw inspiration from the Mevlevi Order and the Whirling Dervishes Ceremony. Structurally, the piece will aim to evoke a sense of ritual and transcendence, inviting the audience into a parallel musical journey across different cultures. The piece will create an immersive experience that reflects the shared spiritual and emotional themes found in diverse musical traditions.
The composition, titled Ancient Istanbul Tales, centers on the city of Istanbul itself. Agoshian, whose work is performed internationally, brings a unique perspective to the city’s story through his deep, intrinsic connection to its rich cultural and historical heritage. Combining elements from a wide range of musical traditions, Agoshian has crafted the piece for a small ensemble, skillfully blending diverse sounds that reflect the city’s timeless, multicultural essence.
This composition celebrates Istanbul’s profound history, cultural richness, and lasting influence, guiding listeners on a musical journey through the heart of a city that has long been a crossroads of diverse peoples and ideas.
